Su bar commision for back wall work experience.

The post on Facebook about the SU bar wall design

This work experience opportunity was offered on facebook. The post was posted by Esther Stephenson. We were told that the theme had to relate to student life. With the design at the SU Bar they said that they would provided the materials.
So with this idea I decide to just design roughs until I find something that I like. (See picture below) with the design process I basically designed stuff from the top of my head. At first I want to go for a random design because I just wanted practice before hand and to clear my mind.

After clearing my mind I decide to go for design which would mostly focusing on pattern, I was going to design this by making a human  figure that had no detail on the person body but focus more on the cloths. I decide on this design so that the people at the bar could project themselves onto the design. But after looking at the design I decided that this was a way too complex design with the pattern and colour. With the materials cost overall I thought if I used too much then it would have not been chosen by them because of the overall cost.

So my next design I was going for something more simple and black and white colour scheme instantly came to mind. I also wanted to included something that would look modern and related to drinking. I decide to go for a portrait of a girl drink because it relates to the chosen theme and I also wanted to practice more with my brush pen.

I have received my response from the competition through the student university email system (below for evidence). I have not won the competition but this has taught me that you might as well try than not and you might just be luck. But I also wish that I could of improved my design by maybe doing a colour range or trying different angles. But I was pleased with the design that I made and I have learned something new.

Artist interview Paul Farrell

Paul Farrell

With this interview I got to see the artist Paul Farrell, who creates illustration based on natural life by using illustrator and screen printing as his way of process.

With this interview, he told me they way that he process his work. He first finds images to reference, so he does some observational drawings before hand or he uses google to get his visual information. He also told us what influenced him as artist, which was his simple coloured design children toys. He said that he was interested in how simple colours effect an object and how it seen. When he is designing his prints he breaks them into simple design which are flat colours, no tonal. He also told us that he has been experimenting with other printing materials such as etching and foil block printing.

When it came to his own work experience he was very brief in that section. But it was very informal for example he told us that he prefers to work freelance because he said that the companies were very strict in what he wanted to design and it just was not his cup of tea. He also does a lot of illustrations for commercial use and pattern design.

With this information about him he then went onto talking about what  advice he could give to me about becoming a illustrator.
  • He said that I need to design what I want to design
  • Dip into a reference folder aka pinterest
  • develop my style
  • keep a colour chart
  • Try and find something create some unique
  • Mistakes are good
  • surround yourself with your influences
  • time is key, sometimes you will be asked to product a final piece straight away
  • Do a range of design for one idea
  • Find the best place to print work
  • try new methods
  • show clients a range of work (new and old)
  • Set own trends (so like interesting business cards like Paul Farrell did business with beer mats)

Work experience day three: Through the woods

This work experience took place on the 11th October to 30th October.

This work experience was about creating an illustration of book called unseen. This is book series that is arranged the university illustration course every year. This years theme was through the woods and we were given the colour scheme of blue and black. I was also told the format the final outcome had to be 300 dpi, colour format: CMYK and it has to be in two layers on blue and the other black.

With this necessary information I know that I wanted to create an illustration that had detail in it. The idea that came to mind when I was told the theme of the project was a hare because they have detailed hair textures and I liked the look in their eyes.

So when I started to design the outcome I looked at reference of a hair so that I would get the right scale of the image and the anatomy. The next thing that decided to do with the layout is to design two different layers on for black and the other for the blue. I had to also decided how I was going to design the layout which was blue for tone and the black would be outlining. The media that I have chosen to draw with is photoshop to practice my photoshop skills and the other reason is because I got my new tablet.

The overall design of the project was fun because I had the freedom to design what I want and that I got chosen for the final outcome of the book.
