Artist interview Paul Farrell

Paul Farrell

With this interview I got to see the artist Paul Farrell, who creates illustration based on natural life by using illustrator and screen printing as his way of process.

With this interview, he told me they way that he process his work. He first finds images to reference, so he does some observational drawings before hand or he uses google to get his visual information. He also told us what influenced him as artist, which was his simple coloured design children toys. He said that he was interested in how simple colours effect an object and how it seen. When he is designing his prints he breaks them into simple design which are flat colours, no tonal. He also told us that he has been experimenting with other printing materials such as etching and foil block printing.

When it came to his own work experience he was very brief in that section. But it was very informal for example he told us that he prefers to work freelance because he said that the companies were very strict in what he wanted to design and it just was not his cup of tea. He also does a lot of illustrations for commercial use and pattern design.

With this information about him he then went onto talking about what  advice he could give to me about becoming a illustrator.
  • He said that I need to design what I want to design
  • Dip into a reference folder aka pinterest
  • develop my style
  • keep a colour chart
  • Try and find something create some unique
  • Mistakes are good
  • surround yourself with your influences
  • time is key, sometimes you will be asked to product a final piece straight away
  • Do a range of design for one idea
  • Find the best place to print work
  • try new methods
  • show clients a range of work (new and old)
  • Set own trends (so like interesting business cards like Paul Farrell did business with beer mats)
